How Often Do Motorcycle Accidents Happen in Florida?
For several years, Florida has held the dubious distinction of being the deadliest state in the US for motorcyclists. In 2019, motorcyclist deaths in Florida accounted for 11% of the nation’s total. Only two other states have even come close to the number of motorcycle fatalities in Florida. The remaining 47 states have significantly fewer motorcycle accidents than Florida, California, and Texas. That information may have you wondering just how often motorcycle accidents happen in Florida.
Florida Experiences an Average of 23 motorcycle accidents Per Day
Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) has determined that there were 8,614 motorcycle accidents in the state in 2021. That equates to approximately 718 per month or 23 per day!
Florida Has The Highest Motorcycle Crash Fatalities of Any State
There were 550 fatalities due to motorcycle accidents in the state in 2019, an average of more than 1.5 fatalities per day. The report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Information Institute (III) shows that only two other states even come close to Florida for motorcycle accident fatalities. They are California with 451 fatalities and Texas with 400. The fourth highest fatalities occurred in North Carolina with just 203, well under half of Florida’s total.
What Can I Do?
As the weather begins to warm and more motorcycles begin to appear on the roadways, make sure that you are doing your part to keep the roads safe for motorcyclists and all others on the roadways. Be alert and aware, and eliminate distractions while driving. To keep motorcyclists safe, the most important thing you can do is to look twice; it just might save a life.
